Ana Vidovic returns to Portland! October 13 2014

Portland Classic Guitar (PCG) is thrilled to present celebrated Croatian guitarist Ana Vidovic, in concert at 8 PM on Thursday, November 6, in Marylhurst University’s St. Anne’s Chapel. This concert will be followed by a master class on Friday, November 7, at 11 AM, in Marylhurst University’s Wiegand Hall. Vidovic is a PCG veteran, and it is recommended that you get your tickets early!

An extraordinary talent—the Washington Post has called her playing “virtually immaculate—detailed, precise and polished,” but also “nuanced and intensely personal, both deeply felt and deeply thought”—Vidovic is widely considered one of the most exciting young guitarists performing today. Hailing from the small town of Karlovac—near Zagreb, Croatia—she began performing internationally at the age of 11, and at 13 became the youngest student to attend the prestigious National Musical Academy in Zagreb, where she studied with Professor Istvan Romer. Her reputation led to an invitation to study with Manuel Barrueco at the Peabody Conservatory, where she graduated in 2005.

Vidovic would go on to win an impressive number of prizes and international competitions, including first prizes in the Albert Augustine International Competition in Bath, England; the Fernando Sor competition in Rome, Italy; and the Francisco Tarrega competition in Benicasim, Spain. Other top prizes include the Eurovision Competition for Young Artists, the Mauro Giuliani competition in Italy, the Printemps de la Guitare in Belgium, and the Young Concert Artists International Auditions in New York. Vidovic has also been featured in three television documentaries by the eminent Croatian director Petar Krelja.

In her brief career, Vidovic has given more than one thousand concerts, and has been heard to great acclaim in New York, London, Paris, Vienna, Rome, Budapest, Warsaw, Tel Aviv, and elsewhere. She has performed as a soloist with such prestigious ensembles as the Romanian Radio Symphony in Bucharest, the Zagreb Soloists in Japan, the Missoula, Tacoma, Westmoreland, West Virginia, and Asheville Symphony Orchestras—the latter conducted by Daniel Meyer—among many others.

Vidovic’s critically-acclaimed Mel Bay-released DVDs feature beautiful renditions of works from composers as diverse as Torroba, Piazzolla, Villa-Lobos, Paganini, Walton, and Bach. “It is difficult to know where to begin when discussing the enormous talents of Ana Vidovic,” wrote Stephen Griesgraber of Guitar Review. “Her dynamic range, beauty of sound, precision of articulation and virtuosity are such that listening becomes more of an absolute musical experience.”
